You Just Can't Outgive Katie

Bold
Helping Grandma sit in her recliner 01/07/09

Katie is my #2 granddog. She owns Kiereney. Dachsies are never owned. They own. #1 rule of DachsieKingdom.

We drove from Virginia to Rhode Island to rescue/adopt her about 10 years ago this month. A fast and furious one day trip. Katie owned a senior citizen before she came to us. The senior citizen, bless her heart, was on Meals On Wheels and would order two meals...one for her and one for Katie! Katie was rather weight-challenged when we got her but with monitored feeding, we got that under control. About 3 months after she came to us, she went down in her back and had to have spine surgery(one of the glitches with dachsies...bad backs)

Right after Kiereney got sick this past April and was gone from Katie a lot, Katie started losing weight and she would get "stuck" in corners, behind chairs, etc. A vet friend of mine diagnosed her with doggie Alzheimers and many of her characteristics remind me of my dad when he had Alzheimers. With Kiereney sick and Kelli up with us now, Katie came to be with Grandma.

Our lives revolve around Katie. Grandpa watches her during the day while Grandma works, Grandma has her until 10:30 and then Kelli has the night shift. When Kelli starts working, Grandma will take over that night shift. Katie has us pretty trained. She either wants to sleep, eat or pace in circles. At night she gets sundowners syndrome and cries.

The last couple of days she's not been into eating dogfood or much of anything so Grandma got the syringe out today and we've been inhaling Grandma's yogurt. We also think ice cream is swell. Tomorrow we're going to try mashed potatoes. Anything for our Katie!

Nothing is better than being in my recliner with Katie on my chest and snuggled under the blanket.

She gives me so much unconditional love. She just looks at me with those bright eyes and snuggles closer on my shoulder.

Her hearing and sight have gone downhill but her sense of smell is phenomenal and just let it be people feeding time and her nose goes up in the air and she's ready to chow.

I don't know how much time she has left but we talked the other night and she said she would let me know if she grew tired of the journey. Right now, even with all her deficits, she has too much spark and personality to send her on her way and she is in no pain nor suffering.

God sure knew what He was doing when he created pets. I am so blessed to have Katie in my life.

Beautiful post Ness. I agree, God knew what he was doing when he gave us pets. Such wonderful devotion and unconditional love they give us. I don't know what I would do without mine. As I type, Baby is laying on my legs, looking at me, like she is thinking of your Katie. I am sure the boys are in with David, laying under his feet at his computer.

I too am glad that you have Katie in your life.

God Bless~

that is such a sweet post. I am owned by my Graciella too. She's a big goofy yellow lab and we are so blessed to be loved by her. She just turned 10 and we have, at times, recently thought about her journey home. I hope that God will let me keep her for a long, long time. Take care and rest up...;)

ness...it is an amazing bond between humans and their pets. When my 14 year old Golden had served his purpose on this earth, it was so difficult but I saw in his eyes it was time to say good-night. Mack was John's dog, when John moved out...Mack moved to heaven four days later. His earthly purpose was served, he was a little boy's dog. The boy is now a man.
You'll know by looking in Katie's eyes when it is her time to say good-night!

Awwwww I love your devotion to Katie. I feel the same about my Frankie. My life was changed so much when my little doxie came into it...

Please give Katie a hug for me.
