I simply have NO WORDS to describe the CPAP mask trial last night...
Surreal, maybe?
Out of body experience, maybe?
I seemed to be OK as long as I was asleep...it didn't keep me from going to sleep. But when they woke me up to change position to my back(I am NOT a back sleeper) then the experience began. Who KNEW if I made the mistake of opening my mouth that I felt like a foghorn hurling air out into the universe? Who KNEW that there would be times that I wanted to jump out of my skin/out of the window(if they had one...now I know why the room doesn't have one...). I felt like I was drowning...air being shoved through my nose and down my throat. So I didn't sleep much. I would gravitate back to my side and they would catch me every time and come in and request me to go back on my back. My back hurts when I lay on it. And of course when you're awake you take inventory and realize that yes, you DO have to go to the bathroom but you have no WAY to make that request known because if you attempt to speak, you get lost in the wind. I had a GREAT tech...I requested her from the last time because she is so kind, knowlegeable and fun but firm...I knew I would have to go through the paces and even my charming self couldn't talk her out of anything essentially needed for testing(although I did talk her into a fan...can't sleep without the wind on my body.)
She came in at what must have been 4:30(they don't allow clocks in the room...my OCD was OCDing BIGTIME -I must know the time all the time!) and said I had one more hour. I knew the test was over at 5:30. How I made it through that hour on my back wide awake can only be attributed to the amazing Grace of God. I planned menus for the upcoming holidays, decided what colors I would use for wrapping(yeah, I am OCD to the OCDeth!), sang songs in my head including every Bible song I knew, and about 400 other mind games and FINALLY she came in and said, "It's over. You did great!" HA, I say in my mind, HA. The last hour has been horrific!
She being the sweet tech she is came in bearing a website and a name of a nasal mask that would be more suitable to comfort and my sleeping style(half shoulder/half stomach) for me to check out Fisher and Paykel Opus when they called to set up a time to deliver my machine and mask. I flew into the bathroom, changed and came out to the wonderful site of my husband with my travel mug of coffee in his hand. He said he didn't sleep much because I wasn't there and he worried about me.
All together now.. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
My lungs and chest are sore but at first I thought I was ready to start the day. It only took my recliner and Colin in my lap to convince me otherwise. I feel like I'm in a stupor. The tech said the restless leg syndrome was practically nonexistent(who KNEW restless leg syndrome liked the air of a CPAP machine?) and that I did not need a chin strap to keep my mouth shut(yeah, I may need to get that in writing for those who think my lips never close...). And yes, I have enough gunk in my hair to put Humpty back together again so heading to the shower now that I think I can stay awake enough to do so.
Debbie and Laura, thank you for your rah rah and cheers....I'm still not convinced I can do this but I know who to turn to when I'm ready to throw it across the bedroom. :-)
Have a blessed Thursday.
This is Hard, Y'all!

If you had told me this year would be harder than last year I never would
have believed you. How could *any* year be harder than 2020-2021??
I'll tell yo...

I have two face masks - one nose type, one full face because they don't tell you that if you have a stuffed up nose, the nose ones will just pressurize it right up your sinuses. I prefer the full face mask. Hope it makes you feel more rested.
i have just the nose mask and i am a side sleeper but in the last 4 yrs i have caught myself being able to sleep on my back some... yes you will throw it... and invent cuss words for it... probably name it (not a nice name) but you will feel better once you defeat it and you will find in time that you can not even take a nap without it... and you will find like i have that youcan sleep 4-5 hours where in the past you felt the need for 12 and still felt groggy.... winny is correct but i never knew a full face mask would make a differenc.... will have to check that out because i get some gnarly headaches when the sinuses are impacted...
I had the nose mask one for the first few weeks and had to go to the full mask. I like the full better, as you can talk without that airy thing, and sleep with your mouth open...LOL.. I like Laura can't even nap now without mine. It does take a little while to get used to, but once you do, it will be your best buddy. I did much better, once I got the full mask. I sleep on my side mostly and with the full mask, that's much easier. I hated th nose one. Just be patient with it, and don't give up. If you hate it in a few months, you cn hit me...LOL
Hugs~
God Bless~
